Introductory Activities
These exemplar grids and pagesets aim to be:
- Playful, simple and motivating. Have fun!
- A way to develop an understanding of the concept of eye control. If the grid is set up with a quick dwell time speed, a quick reward will be received.
- Fail proof (success is important!), non-challenging and related to skill-level, age and interest.
- Suitable for assessment.
Faces
How does the grid work?
This is an example of a grid that has four cells across and four cells down. As the end-user looks at a face, a cursor appears like a nose in the middle of the cell. You may wish to adjust the size of the dwell feedback type (shrinking dot or clock), depending on the size of the monitor and the needs of the end-user. Auditory feedback can be switched on if preferred. As with other introductory activities, this grid-set helps to identify the most appropriate size of cell for the end-user (Donegan, M. 2007).

Musical Grids
Musikanten
How does the grid work?
Music is and always has been enjoyable for people of any age. There are many ways to make musical grids, and matching them to the end-user's own musical taste definitely gives them greater impact. This is an example of a grid with 5 cells across and 3 cells down. The end-user selects a page of guitar music, either notes or chords, and simply dwells on a cell in order to play the note or chord. It guarantees success (Donegan, M. 2007). This grid was made in The Grid1 and SAW.

Musical Grids: For Kids
Below are a couple of more examples of the kind of musical grids that can be used as introductory activities. Due to copyright reasons, we cannot distribute these grids but we wanted to share the ideas. It should be fairly easy to implement the grids following their description and the picture of the grid.
Above is an example of a grid that has 4 cells across, 3 cells down and a central resting place. In this particular grid, Swedish children’s songs have been used, but it would be easy to use the childs' favourite songs, nursery rhymes, or theme tunes etc.

Musical Grids: Tom
This is an example of a grid with smaller sized targets. Although it has 5 cells across and 4 cells down, the targets are well spaced in order to avoid making any accidental hits. The end-user chooses one of several music files (for example Hendrix, Metallica, Prodigy, etc), or famous expressions by famous film and cartoon characters.

Shopping
How does the grid work?
Grids can be further simplified by presenting several choices and only making certain cells active. This is an example of a simple grid with 3 cells across and 2 cells down. Not only are the targets large but also four of them are inactive. The end-user indicates their choice through dwelling on an item of shopping in response to questions in conversation, but they turn the page with the active arrow.

How does the pageset work?
Kids love to explore and to "discover" what’s hidden behind barriers. In this 2x2 game, they can independently do so. Can you guess what lies behind the buttons? Select the buttons to make them disappear and find out.
This grid is very easy to implement. To make the grid interesting and motivating, the items on grids should be chosen following the individual's interests.
